Weather parameters in MetGIS Pro+

Weather-related parameters

SHOWN ON THE MAPS

The MetGIS temperature maps show the predicted air temperature 2 m above the ground and are given in degrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F). These maps are particularly finely structured due to the adaptation to the high-resolution terrain.

The wind data includes both the speed and the direction of the wind and refers to a height of 10 m above the ground. The wind is given in meters per second (m/s), kilometers per hour (km/h), miles per hour (mph) or knots (kn). As our high-resolution terrain models are also used to calculate wind parameters, our weather maps are astonishingly accurate for very small areas.

This variable specifies the duration of sunshine for certain time intervals. The duration of sunshine is measured in hours. There are various limits to the exact prediction of the duration of sunshine, such as the shading caused by steep terrain or the question of how to assess sunrays that “just barely” shine through thin, high clouds.

This combined variable provides information on cloud cover, precipitation and snowfall. It helps to better understand weather patterns and analyze complex weather phenomena.

Cloud cover: The cloud cover is given as a percentage (0-100 %). 0% stands for cloudless weather, 100% for completely overcast skies. For example, 75% cloud cover means that three quarters of the sky is covered with clouds.

Precipitation: Three-hour precipitation amounts are given, which fall in the form of rain or sleet (without the formation of snow cover). The unit used is millimetres/centimetre (mm/cm) or inches (in).

Fresh snow:The amounts of fresh snow (in cm or inch) are shown here, which are predicted for three-hour periods. The areas of fresh snow appear particularly finely structured on the maps due to the adaptation to the high-resolution terrain.

Precipitation radar: The precipitation radar provides a real-time display of the current precipitation. It helps you to follow the weather in real time and react quickly to changes in the weather.

This variable shows the amount of fresh snow that has fallen in a given period. It is measured in centimetres (cm) and is particularly important for winter sports and snow clearing.

Fresh snow 0-24 h: Shows the amount of fresh snow in the last 24 hours.

Fresh snow 24-48 h: Shows the amount of fresh snow in the last 24 to 48 hours.

Fresh snow 48-72 h: Shows the amount of fresh snow in the last 48 to 72 hours.

Displays the current snow cover height.

Sentinel snow cover: Displays the snow cover data from the Sentinel-2 satellite.

Modis snow cover: Provides snow cover data from the MODIS satellite.

Specifies the source of the map basis, MetGIS, EOX or OpenStreetMaps.

Weather parameters

SHOWN IN THE POINT FORECAST TABLES

The weather for each day of the week is displayed using symbols and is therefore easy to recognize.

The temperature throughout the day and the minimum and maximum daily value in degrees Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F).

The amount of precipitation in mm or inch and the probability in percent.

The wind direction and the wind speed in km/h, m/s or mph.

Shows the time of sunrise and sunset, and the duration of sunshine per day in hours.

Displays the relative humidity in %.

Technical details MetGIS Pro+

Time details MetGIS Pro+

Temporal resolution: The temporal resolution (prediction interval) of the forecasts is:
– Forecast maps: usually three hours.
– New snow maps are also available as 24-hour totals for today, tomorrow and the day after tomorrow.

– Point forecast histograms: one hour or one day.

Updating the forecasts: Our forecasts are fully updated at least twice a day.

Forecast horizon: Each forecast covers the next three days (maps) or the next 10 days (point forecast histograms).

Spatial details MetGIS Pro+

Spatial resolution: Currently, the resolution of the weather maps over Central Europe, the Pyrenees and parts of South America is less than 100m, the rest of the world 1km.
We can quickly set up additional extra-high resolution forecast regions for you.

3D maps: are currently already available in beta mode and will soon be available to our customers.
This is associated with an attractive plastic representation of the weather, with exciting navigation options.

Geographical background information: By default, we use a database based on OpenStreetMap as the background for our weather maps.

We are also happy to integrate customer-specific geographical information (special waypoints, roads, routes, etc.) into MetGIS Pro+ if required.

MetGIS Pro+ Point forecasts

WEATHER TIME SERIES FOR ANY LOCATION

If any point is selected or clicked on in the MetGIS Pro+ maps, the weather forecast for this location (e.g. towns, peaks, etc.) for the next 10 days is displayed in the form of point forecast histograms (tables with numerical values and graphic symbols).
Daily forecasts can also be output in hourly resolution.
The time series contain all relevant forecast parameters.

For special industries

Snow and avalanches

For ski resorts, slope management, avalanche warning services and anyone involved with snow and mountains.
MetGIS Pro+ is a great help, especially for weather monitoring over larger ski resorts or the respective focus region of avalanche warning services.

Mining

For opencast mines that want to gain a good overview of the weather situation in the mine area and its surroundings (transport routes).
Weather-related disruptions such as storms, heavy snowfall or heavy rain must be located in time so that appropriate measures can be taken.

Traffic

For traffic control centers that monitor the weather over a large area and want to react to potentially dangerous weather conditions in good time.
MetGIS Pro+ is a valuable tool especially for winter road services.

More

Other sectors for which MetGIS Pro+ can provide good service include energy, agriculture, tourism and retail.
The product is interesting for all applications where a good weather overview over a larger area is required, but not much effort is to be put into the development of own visualization systems.
